I noticed that the lighting throughout the film became gradually darker as Jeff’s suspicion about Thorwald grew stronger. The cinematography of this film focused on the lighting and shadows that created a sense of mystery and suspense. One scene that displays this is when Thorwald walks into Jeff’s apartment. His eyes are visible at first but then are covered with darkness. Jeff’s face is covered with darkness as well and all we see are his hands and legs. This created mystery and suspense because we could not see there facial expressions or get a sense of what might happen next. The mise en scene in this film allows us to understand who the characters are and what they like. The costume and props revealed what the characters were interested in and how they lived. Liza was always beautifully dressed in vibrant colors and served Jeff an amazing lobster dinner. Jeff’s costume was plain and simple that blended in with the props scattered throughout his apartment. We also learned about the other characters who didn’t speak in the film from the way they dressed and the visible props in their apartment. I enjoyed how the camera was moved and angled in a way that let us see everything through Jeff’s point of view. It allows us to understand how Jeff used his free time having been cooped up in his apartment all day and night.
