Do the Right Thing

In Do the Right Thing directed by Spike Lee , I observed how the cinematography and sound were highly demonstrated in this film. I absolutely loved this movie and each character’s own unique personality. It is clear that the plot revolves around racism and conflict between the black and white people in the community. There are only a few instances that show the black and white people being friendly to one another but there is a clear division between each race. I have mixed feelings for Sal because although he did not respect the black people and their opinions, he defended them when Pino was being disrespectful and racist. The character I really did not like was Pino because he was so racist and victimized himself to make the black people look like an issue when it was clearly he who was. I noticed that Lee took advantage of high and low angle shots that exemplified the conflict between two characters like Raheem and Sal. I also liked how he included a lot of tilt shots because this was an interesting way to view the interaction between the character’s from an unusual angle. The sound was a reflection of the events that took place like “Fight the Power” which symbolized the black culture and fight against the abuse of power. I think this movie is a great example of how discontinuity editing can be successful and I was impressed by Lee’s ability to convey the issue of racism through great creativity and auteur.

  1. Jillian,

This post focuses on themes and aesthetic practices in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Regarding themes, you emphasize the interracial dynamics and tensions at work in the film. While this is most evident in the relationship between white people (Sal and his sons, the police, etc.) and the black community, Lee also includes characters with other ethnic identities, including Puerto Rican and Korean. You also touch on some of the aesthetic strategies Lee uses, including cinematography (the low angles in the confrontation scene), sound, and editing.

You have a lot of great ideas here, but you need to develop them further, providing specific examples to support each of your main ideas. Also, don’t forget that posts have to be at least 300 words to receive full credit.
